Abstract:Contrary to the wide expectation that the concepts 'race' and 'ethnicity' should be removed from the mind-sets of South Africans, this paper suggests that these concepts should instead be tolerated and nurtured in sensitive ways that are consistent with growing international trends in recognition of minority/group rights, in particular the recognition and active support of minority needs such as languages and customs. From this perspective the paper addresses the issue of the languages of a significant minority in South Africa, viz. people of Indian origin, in the context of its ethnic and racial diversity and takes a critical look at The Bill of Rights in the constitution. Bibliogr., sum. in Afrikaans and English.
