Abstract: | An African writers-publishers seminar was held at Arusha, Tanzania, in February 1998. The seminar revisited some of the concerns of two earlier seminars held in Arusha (1984 and 1996). It also represented a new development since its focus was literary publishing, rather than publishing in general. Its aim was to work out a 'New Deal' which would result in a more united approach to the problems and challenges of strengthening African literature and culture. This article is a report of the 1998 seminar and describes the themes that were dealt with: writer and publisher: ideals and reality - encouraging creative writing and supporting writers - the economics of publishing in the African context - marketing and creating markets - new techniques in publishing and marketing - 'The African Writers' Handbook' - how to choose the right publisher - rights and agreements, codes of good practice and arbitration of disputes - the 'New Deal' and beyond. The text of the 'New Deal' is included on p. 80-83. Note. |
