Abstract: | This issue of Wasafiri has a special focus on Mauritian writing in English. Writing in English in Mauritius is 'a relatively recent phenomenon' and its emergence has often been a troubled one due to a number of different 'ideological and political motivations', as well as the complex linguistic history of the island. The special section starts with a survey of Mauritian writing in English by Nandini Bhautoo-Dewnarian. This is followed by an article on the influence of Shakespeare on Mauritian writing in English and Kreol by Shawkat M. Toorawa. The section further contains a diary by Roger Moss, who visited the island in February 1999, and a number of poems and short stories. Notes, ref. |
