Abstract:This article reflects upon the overseas acquisitions of the University of Botswana Library (UBL). Since its establishment, the UBL has been sourcing the bulk of its materials through overseas booksellers. Acquiring books or journals through the Botswana retail book sector is difficult. Most books sourced from local suppliers ended up being very expensive because discount would be offered off the inflated price as opposed to off the cover price of the book as done by overseas suppliers. The capacity of local vendors to supply and the quality of their services is weak due to lack of skilled booksellers and communication links. Furthermore, the UBL often only disposes of sketchy information about the few scholarly books produced in Botswana because new publications are not well publicized. The article makes recommendations on how to improve the Botswana book sector so that the UBL could purchase more materials from the local book industry. The article was originally presented as a paper to the first Southern African Library Acquisition Conference (August 2000, Johannesburg). Ref.
