Abstract: | This paper examines lexico-semantic relations errors in the English writing of pupils with English as a Secondary Language (ESL). 200 students, ranging in age between 15 and 20, were selected from 10 senior secondary schools in Osun and Ondo States in southwestern Nigeria. They were asked to write an informal letter. The lexico-semantic errors in the texts of these letters were traced to four linguistic sources: collocation, generalization, similarity and duplication. The findings reveal that collocation errors are predominant, accounting for 56.5 percent of the total lexico-semantic errors. The reason for this may be traced to improper mastery of lexical sense relations. This aspect of lexical studies is often neglected in ESL classrooms. As a result, the writers cannot define boundaries that separate lexical items. The paper concludes that teachers should teach lexical sense relations and should emphasize collocations, especially the types that students have difficulty in learning. Pupils should also be encouraged to read a lot of literature written in English. App., bibliogr., sum. |
