Abstract: | This paper presents the Arabic text and English translation of three letters written between 1918 and 1931 during the reign of 'lamido' Mu.hammad Njidda (1870-1945) and as such concerning the contemporary history of the 'lamidate' (kingdom in the Adamawa Emirate) of Bibemi. During the colonial epoch, the kingdom was enclosed in the autonomous subdivision of Garoua, North Cameroon. Attention is also paid to the historical context within which the letters were written. The letters illustrate the themes of accession to power within a context of profound social and political transformations, and collaboration and conflict between the traditional authorities and the French colonial administration.
