Abstract:Since the anticolonial revolutions in Africa, the relationship between Nigeria and South Africa has been characterized by confrontation. The question of democracy - or rather the lack thereof - was at the heart of the tensions between the two African giants. Another important element is how the two countries were caught in an undeclared contest for leadership in Africa. Some observers would argue that, today, the relationship between Nigeria and South Africa has come full circle as both countries are now democratized, and are jointly seeking to play the roles of stabilizers and democratizers in Africa. This article has three objectives. It firstly assesses the past relations between Nigeria and South Africa by highlighting the changed natures of their leadership roles. It argues that the two giants essentially traded places in the past. Secondly, the article assesses the nature of the present relationship between Nigeria and South Africa, and investigates the extent to which there is a strategic partnership developing between the two States. Finally, it probes the prospects for future cooperation between Nigeria and South Africa, and asks whether in fact it is feasible for them to act as hegemons that would fill the power vacuums that currently persist in Africa. Ref., sum. in English and French (p. 11).
