Abstract: | Only very recently concerns have begun to be raised about the fact that South Africa's geographic location might adversely impact on the success of its exports by imposing relatively high transport costs on exporters. South Africa's Department of Transport (DOT) released a report in May 1999 in which it maps out a 20-year strategy for transportation in South Africa. In light of the focus placed on shipping costs within the DOT's 20-year strategy, this paper quantifies the impact of shipping costs on South Africa's exports. It describes the relationship between South Africa's exports and shipping and estimates a standard export supply function for South Africa. The regression results obtained indicate that the significant determinants of export supply for South Africa are the real exchange rate, the value of imports and international transport costs.
