Abstract:Discussions of mixed farming often assume that such systems represent part of a somehow natural, evolutionary progression towards an ideal state, and that other options are unproductive or unsustainable. This book argues that such deterministic, lineral evolutionary views can be questioned, because they fail to recognize the diverse pathways of change that occur, and, in particular, the institutional and social contexts that influence such change. The book demonstrates how understanding the origins, dynamics and trajectories of such pathways of change is essential for more effective development policy and practice. It looks at the diverse pathways of crop and livestock change in three contrasting settings, in Ethiopia, Mali and Zimbabwe. Contributors: Karen Brock, Grace Carswell, N'golo Coulibaly, James Keely, Billy Mukamuri, Joshua Ramisch, Ian Scoones, Bevlyne Sithole, and William Wolmer. [ASC Leiden abstract]
