Abstract: | Development studies and anthropology are distinct academic disciplines. However, development is a subject of anthropological study; the planning and implementation of development interventions in rural livelihoods create livelihoods for consulting anthropologists, and at the same time provide opportunities for anthropologists to contribute to development. This article reflects upon anthropologists' participation in pre-appraisal work for the Lower Usuthu Smallholder Irrigation Project (LUSIP) in Swaziland. It considers their contribution to the project in particular and development in general in terms of their participation in and their experience of the project. Notes, ref. |
