Abstract:Anthropologists and health and development specialists combine their efforts more and more on issues relating to the environment and health. This article provides an example of collaborative work between an anthropologist and epidemiologists on the quality of life in a specific urban environment. Together they examined the linkages between the nature and level of development, the state of environment and health in Alexandra, a township area to the north of central Johannesburg (South Africa). In their collaboration, the anthropologist contributed the more qualitative methodology and interpretation which complemented the use of statistics and health indicators by her co-authors. Their study indicates the extremely dangerous conditions, from a health point of view, of the Alexandra township living environment. Bibliogr.
