Abstract: | This paper describes the history of the Golden Stool of Asante (Ghana) between 1896 and 1905. The exile of Asantehene Prempeh I in 1896, and the subsequent collapse of central power in Asante, provides the context for an examination of the peregrination of the Golden Stool. The paper documents the stool's whereabouts while it was hidden. It explains the motives and behaviour, not only on the part of those who guarded the stool but also among those others who were prepared to surrender it to the British. Throughout the paper offers some general observations about evolving perceptions of the Golden Stool in a time when the coming of colonialism wrought unprecedented upheaval and change. Notes, ref. |
