Abstract: | The Adlamont Farming System and Demonstration Centre in Chinyika Resettlement, Makoni North District, Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe, was set up as one of the major training and extension centres of the resettlement projects launched in the immediate postindependence period. The present study, based on fieldwork in late 1995, identifies the social profile of those who were beneficiaries of the free training offered, and to what extent training and other social characteristics of farm households have been determinants for the adoption of improved farming methods. The results of the logistics regression established a strong relationship between the probability of adoption of improved farming practices and training, and to some extent, urban origins and prior farming occupations. Those who own more cattle and oxen were also more likely to train and adopt innovations. The relationship between the ownership of resources and training was significant only with respect to the ownership of cattle. The relationship between training and nonresource household characteristics, such as education, sex, age, and residence and occupation of household heads and their spouses, was more systematic. Urban presettlement residence of household heads coupled with a rural background in farming/labouring very significantly increased the probability of taking part in training.
