Abstract: | On 2 March, 2001, at the end of the fifth extraordinary Summit of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), held at Sirte in Libya, the establishment of the African Union (AU), replacing the thirty-eight year old OAU, was declared. It formally came into existence on 26 May, 2001, after it had acquired the necessary ratifications. This is seen as a landmark in the old vision of a United States of Africa. Although it cannot be denied that there are innumerable advantages and opportunities awaiting a united Africa, it will be no means always be plain sailing. This article weighs up the prospects of success of this project. |
