Abstract:This article analyses the legal status of humanitarian interventions in contemporary international law and investigates how the concept can be applied with the aim of securing durable peace and a culture of human rights in Africa. The article first gives an overview of ongoing internal armed conflicts in Africa before analysing the concept of humanitarian intervention, its origins and evolution. It then analyses the legal basis for humanitarian intervention and explores the applicability of humanitarian intervention through intergovernmental organizations in Africa. The final part consists of some concluding remarks and recommendations. Notes, ref.
