Abstract: | This paper on the Botswanacraft Marketing Company, which was officially created in 1970, reflects on its history, the efforts of people working in craft development in Botswana, and on the craft sector in general. A historical event which was to have a lasting impact on the handicraft industry of Botswana and on Botswanacraft, and which would cause the revival of basket industry and other traditional crafts in Botswana, was the influx of Hambukushu refugees from Angola to Etsha. From 1972 through 1977 a variety of technical advisors were funded through the International Trade Centre UNCTAD/GATT to do craft development and marketing work in Botswana. The paper also briefly pays attention to the sustainable use and management of natural resources used in the craft industry, and to the development of contemporary craft products at production units, many of which were created in the 1970s and 1980s with donor funding.
