Abstract: | The population of South Africa was divided by the Population Registration Act of 1950 into four distinct categories, namely Whites, Indians, Africans and Coloureds. The latter group was further subdivided into 'Cape Malay', Other Coloureds, Khoisan, Bastards et al. This essay revisits the question of 'Cape Malay' identity by examining a selection of recent writings that deal with the issue. This is followed by an annotated list of bibliographical material that specifically focuses upon the 'Cape Malays'. Ref. |
