Abstract:The Reserve Bank of South Africa has set its ultimate target in terms of the inflation rate and is currently using a short-term interest rate as its operational variable. In this article, the author sets out a Monetary Conditions Index (MCI) that can be used as a rule or simply as a guidepost of the stance of monetary conditions in South Africa, indicating how the operational target should be adjusted in order to obtain a more stable macroeconomic environment.
