Abstract: | This article contends that the perceptions of ethical conduct of public officials as reflected in the media are necessarily limited, since they typically consider the perceptions and understanding of members of the public as reflected in the media, among other possibly subjective sources. The article reports on research done among public officials in five public service departments with their headquarters based in Pretoria, South Africa. The research focuses on the perceptions that public officials have of the ethical challenges and dilemmas that they face. The article draws conclusions from the statistics that result and, throughout, provides proposals in an attempt to address the perceived ethical dilemmas. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum.
