Abstract: | This paper is grounded in a socio-anthropological investigation of citizenship issues in contemporary Durban (South Africa) conducted by the author between 1999 and 2002. The paper first discusses philosophical and sociological parameters of citizenship. It then proceeds to a number of considerations, including the symbolism of the city and of citizenship contrasted to other forms of social membership, the actual practices and initiatives of certain categories of people within the whole metropolitan 'community', and the related Durban Metro policies impacting on the conception and practice of citizenship.
