Abstract: | Public participation lies at the heart of democracy. In democratizing the governing process, public participation conveys information about public needs and demands from the public to policymakers and implementers, and vice versa. It also promotes a responsiveness to public needs and facilitates the processes of policy implementation and community development. In addition to investigating factors necessitating public participation in governance, this article identifies various ways and means by which public participation can be improved in South Africa.
