| Abstract: | Cross-border trade in the Somalia borderlands, an area where trade is subject to few regulations, is significant not only for the economies of the border region but also for areas well into the interior of Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. Cross-border trade also plays a critical role in regional food security. The study covers the border markets of three areas: the Kenya/southern Somalia border, which focuses on long-distance, export cattle trade to Kenya, especially the Nairobi market; the eastern Ethiopia/central Somalia border, which focuses mainly on local domestic trade, both in livestock and cereals; and the eastern Ethiopia/Somaliland border, which focuses on the export of small stock to the Middle East and imported food and consumer items. Data were collected over an eight-month period during the summers of 1996, 1998 and 1999. Bibliogr., notes. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
