Abstract: | This article highlights and interrogates the recent resurgence of the view, both in the academy and in international financial institutions, that African culture has been a stumbling block to development. It argues, instead, for a development perspective that is informed by the realities of Africa today. The views of African humanists and philosophers on development, including B.A. Ogot, Kwame Gyekye, Valentine Mudimbe, Paulin Hountoundji and Kwame Anthony Appiah, are highlighted. The case is made for a return to building on the indigenous roots of African culture as a way forward. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. in English and French. [Journal abstract] |
