Abstract:Although many labguages are spoken in Tanzania, only two of them were adopted as offical languages: English and Kiswahili. This bilingual stance was extended to the issue of the medium of instruction, by making both languages media of instruction at different levels of education. English was made the sole medium of instruction at secondary and tertiary levels of education, while Kiswahili was made the medium of instruction at the primary school level. Based on an examination of the Tanzanian educational system, this article first discusses the use of two media of instruction, before reviewing various matters relating to the use of a single medium of instruction in an educational system. The article focuses on secondary schools. Bibliogr. [ASC Leiden abstract]
