Abstract: | The May 2002 general elections have been hailed as a victory for peace and democracy in Sierra Leone after several years of bad governance and conflict. The nature of public as well as civil society involvement in the electoral process marks a decisive step in that direction. This is evident in the nature and level of voter turnout, tolerance, political consciousness, songs, rallies and media programmes that characterize the entire process. However, sustained participation will largely depend on meeting public expectations in terms of government performance. Whether this will help transform the logic of ethnoregional voting preferences still remains uncertain. It is now apparent that 'talking, singing and dancing' democracy only provides a clearer picture of the challenges that lie ahead. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. in English and in French (p. 15).
