Abstract: | Abdulrahman Mohamed Babu, who died in 1996, belonged to the first generation of African marxists who participated in the struggle for independence, national liberation and people's revolution. This was also the age of great intellectual and ideological ferment. No doubt this 'insurrection of ideas' was worldwide but the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) was the African hotbed of this intellectual ferment. The author examines the transformation from the age of liberation and revolution, in which the forces of reaction generally, and imperialism particularly, were on the defensive, to the current period of 'international community'. He argues that the intellectual discourse or the 'insurrection of ideas' of the age of liberation and revolution was as important in delegitimizing imperialism as the suppression of ideas and decimation of the intellectual body has been in rehabilitating it. He illustrates this by the transformation of the intellectual discourse and the metamorphosis of the Intellectual at the University of Dar es Salaam. Bibliogr. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
