| Abstract: | Events in an idyllic African village are monitored shortly before logging trucks arrive to cut down the surrounding forest forcing villagers into wretched shantytowns like those found outside cities throughout the third world. In the face of the familiar intention to register change cinematographically, this surprisingly unsentimental film has not only the Special Jury Prize of Venice 89 to recommend it, but, above all, its cinematography and the natural and unaffected non-professional performances of the villagers.
