Abstract: | Dr. Anna Böeseken (1905-1997) can without contradiction be rated as one of the greatest authorities on the history of the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC) at the Cape. This article examines her contribution in making the history of the VOC in South Africa accessible. First, attention is paid to her family background and academic training. Next, her career in teaching, publishing and the archives service is examined. This is followed by a discussion of her historical work and an attempt to judge its merit. The article concludes that she not only played an important part in making the sources accessible to researchers, but that she also made an enormous contribution in interpreting and popularizing the history of the VOC at the Cape. Ref., sum. in English and Afrikaans, text in Afrikaans. [Journal abstract] |
