Abstract: | The quality of working life of a teacher is the result of the interaction between the individual teacher, with his/her attitudes, values and expectations, and the features of the educational system in which the teacher finds him-/herself. The aim of this study is to determine how teachers in South Africa experience the quality of their working life. A total number of 1539 teachers participated in this research. Teachers from good, average and poor schools completed a questionnaire that included items dealing with organizational climate, culture, the facilities in the school and teachers' views of recent changes in education in South Africa. The same questionnaire was implemented in several schools in Belgium. It was found that teachers in South African schools experience uncertainty with regard to recent changes in the education system. There is also a lack of support from principals, especially in poor schools. The level of frustration among teachers was also found to be high. Bibliogr., sum. in English, text in Afrikaans.
