Abstract:Of the threshold of a new century, Afrikaans prose writers find themselves at the crossroads. In the wake of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee's hearings and the centenary of the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) many novels are historically oriented and several of the best novels deal in detail with this war or the apartheid era. In the work of many (notably not only younger) writers there is an increased indifference and even scornfulness towards the past. They are interested (and often almost obsessed) with either the present political situation in South Africa and the existential dilemmas it causes, or with what can be termed the 'private ache'. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. in English, text in Afrikaans. [Journal abstract]
