Abstract: | The 'mwidiki' folk narrative is performed by the Nguu (Morogoro region, Tanzania) on the fortieth day after the death of a relative. It is a long conversation based mainly on the life of the deceased and the future relations in the family. It is an oral narrative which serves as a springboard for clearing moral and cultural issues in the everyday lives of the Nguu and for maintaining continuity of culture and social unity. The author, who attended six burial ceremonies in Morogoro rural district, describes the 'mwidiki' performance and the various participants. Bibliogr. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
