Abstract: | This collective volume analyses a wide variety of health issues in sub-Saharan Africa and arrives at conclusions of policy relevance. It documents research by African researchers based in universities, ministries of health and the private sector in sub-Saharan Africa, in collaboration with policy advisors in government health ministries. The research was sponsored by the International Health Policy Programme (IHPP) over the period 1988-2000. The 33 chapters from eight African countries (Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mali, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda) are organized in six parts following the introduction: overview; demand for health care; health care financing; efficiency and equity in health service provision; health sector structure, regulation and reform; and external assistance.
