Abstract: | Qualitative data on the perceptions and experiences of peasants in two communities of North Shewa, Ethiopia, based on fieldwork conducted in November 2000, are used to discuss the socioeconomic factors that account for the reasons why households fall into or avoid poverty. Access to assets that are the basis of agricultural production to a great extent determines households' livelihood security. At the same time social events and peasants' restructuring of their households affect their access to and control of assets in a dynamic manner. In addition to levels of access to key production assets and households' livelihood strategies, networks of mutual assistance and exchange of resources among households, such as revolving credit groups and animal sharing, are critical in determining whether households are able to avoid, cope with, or emerge from poverty.
