Abstract: | The Società Eritrea per le Miniere d'Oro, founded in 1900, was created in order to exploit the gold mining potential of Eritrea. Despite the fact that the Società was listed on the Italian stock exchange, it never managed to make a profit and went bankrupt in 1914. This paper, through the vicissitudes of the Società, follows the initial phases of the gold mining industry in Eritrea, and analyses how great expectations soon gave way to disappointment and then scandal. The gold mining industry also had a major impact on the environment, contributing to pollution and deforestation in the country. Notes, ref., sum. in English and French, text in Italian.
