| Abstract: | The Urhobo of the plains of the Niger Delta in present Delta State, Nigeria, believe that destiny can be influenced by external forces such as witches and sorcerers or by one's own irresponsibility, but that it is also possible to alter destiny using appropriate rituals. Based amongst others on interviews, this paper examines Urhobo cosmology and uses two examples to illustrate the ritual processes and elements used to alter destiny. Notes, ref.
