Abstract:Within the organizational structures and processes of educational institutions in developing countries, gender plays a much larger role than is often realized. Taking Zimbabwe as an example, this paper looks at opportunities for women in educational management in institutions of higher learning. In Zimbabwe, there are no longer any legal barriers to equality in the teaching profession. However, the problem that continues to challenge policymakers in Zimbabwe and elsewhere is how to develop an education service that is free from bias, stereotyping and discrimination in the face of deeply ingrained cultural and religious attitudes. The paper presents arguments advocating the case for women in school management, as well as strategies for change. It argues that strategies for genuine opportunities, and not the mere inclusion of females in decisionmaking, ought to be considered under three main categories, namely, positive discrimination or forceful legislation, training, and institutional development.
