| Abstract: | This paper explores some current thinking on the way in which dominant forces in universities in Africa have opened up possibilities for strategizing gender equity within institutional contexts, and considers the potential of policies on gender equity for actual transformational shifts within the consciousness and core business of different African-based universities. The first section describes the gendered nature of institutions of higher education within African contexts. Section two summarizes key conversations on the nature of gender equity policy interventions. These conversations concentrate on various forms of affirmative action. The last section uses two case study explorations of sexual harassment and sexual violence in particular African university settings to concretize the suggestion that problems of 'gender equity' cannot be located simply within the demographics of institutions. The paper analyses the politics of sexual harassment as a zone through which university staff and students can be seen, at various levels, to negotiate the genders they need for survival.
