Abstract: | Despite the spectacular growth of Christianity in Africa over the 20th century, even the most recent attempts by mainline church historians to help seminarians and church leaders locate themselves and find their way in the 'terra firma' of contemporary World Christianity take scarcely any note of Africa. In order to fill this gap, a scholarly consultation was hosted by the Overseas Ministries Study Center in New Haven in 1995. It was convened to discuss the need for a proposed 'International dictionary of non-Western Christian biography. Volume I: Africa, or an oral history Christian biography register for Africa'. This paper examines the development of this 'Dictionary of African Christian Biography' (DACB), a database spanning twenty centuries of Christian faith on the African continent, which is produced as a web-based resource and distributed as a CD-ROM in its annually updated form to all African participating institutions.
