Abstract: | This bibliography on Islam in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa was prepared in the context of the research project 'Islam, the disengagement of the State, and globalization in sub-Saharan Africa', a collaborative effort of the African Studies Centre Leiden and the Centre d'Étude d'Afrique Noire in Bordeaux. It supplements and updates two earlier bibliographies: 'Islam in sub-Saharan Africa: a partially annotated guide' (1978) by Samir Zoghby, and 'Islam in Africa South of the Sahara: a select bibliographic guide' (1977) by Patrick Ofori. The bibliography lists over 4000 references to literature in European languages about Islam in sub-Saharan Africa. All items deal with the period after independence (c. 1960-2005). Items are numbered sequentially and arranged geographically according to the broad regions of Africa. Within regions, entries are arranged by country, and within each country, alphabetically by author. The bibliography is supplemented with two brief sections on the Arab world and the West. The bibliography is also available as an online database at 'www.ascleiden.nl/Publications/Bibliographies/IslamInAfrica', where abstracts are included for many entries. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
