Abstract:This study describes the relationship between child disability and parental migration status in South Africa. Child disability is an important health status indicator that can provide insights into the morbidity levels of migrants in their host societies. The analysis is based on data from the 1996 South African Population Census. The results indicate that though children of immigrants were generally less likely to be disabled than those of the native-born population, the immigrant advantage was significant only among children of immigrants from countries that are not part of the SADC. Additionally, the children of South African-born internal migrants were more likely to be disabled than the children of South African-born non-migrants. The study also compares the likelihood of school enrolment of disabled children and their non-disabled counterparts and investigates the odds of school enrolment of the disabled children of the different migrant groups.
