About person: | George Jesse Heys (1852-1939) |
Abstract: | Born in Durban (South Africa) in 1852, George Jesse Heys became one of the then Transvaal Republic's most successful entrepreneurs and his name is inextricably linked with that of Pretoria. Based almost exclusively on primary documentary material - business letters and private correspondence -, this paper examines George Heys the coaching line proprietor, businessman and committed Transvaler, as well as his strong identification with and commitment to his British background. He died in England in 1939 but was buried in Pretoria. Notes, ref., sum. in English and Afrikaans. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
