Abstract: | In the Sahel, the most important cities are often located in the southern regions along rivers, i.e. in the regions relatively well endowed with water. Consequently, those urban centres have peri-urban surroundings, which are relatively favourable for biomass production (food and firewood). But as urban growth transforms the surrounding zone, the ecosystem in these regions comes under pressure. This chapter presents the findings of research on these rural-urban linkages focusing on the effects of climate change and change in climate variability. Four fields are treated: rural-urban migration flows, government policy on food supplies to cities, and the increasing demand for biomass fuel and water. Research was carried out in the capitals of Burkina Faso (Ouagadougou), Mali (Bamako), Niger (Niamey) and Senegal (Dakar). Sum. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
