Abstract: | This paper examines the housing problems faced by Gweru City Council (Zimbabwe) along with their socioeconomic impact on lodgers and landlords. An analysis of the waiting list from 1987 to 1996 reveals that the City of Gweru has been unable to contain this problem. The scarcity of housing has led to overcrowding of houses with resultant defunct sewerage systems and health hazards as well as lack of sleeping space and subsequent social problems. The paper also provides information on lodgers' income levels, age, marital status, and ways in which they cope with housing problems. Furthermore, attention is paid to building costs. The paper is based on fieldwork and data from the Department of Housing and Community Services in Gweru, the archives, the Ministry of Local Government, and the Ministry of Public Construction and National Housing.
