Abstract:Political liberalization in Cameroon in the early 1990s gave rise to the formation of several autonomous teachers' organizations. This article focuses on the two most important ones in the Anglophone part of the country and assesses their organizational strength in a continuously hostile political environment. The two organizations clearly differ in their objectives and strategies. The older - the Teachers' Association of Cameroon (TAC) - is a professional association that tends to be mainly interested in the defence of regional interests, in particular the preservation of the Anglophone educational legacy and improvement in the conditions of service of its Anglophone members only. The younger - the Cameroon Teachers' Trade Union (CATTU) - is a trade union that champions class above regional interests. Striving for reforms in the entire Cameroonian educational system and the improvement of conditions of service of all Cameroonian teachers, the latter has established alliances with various teachers' trade unions in Francophone Cameroon. Faced with apparent government insensitivity to their demands, both organizations have tended to display a high degree of militancy. Their failure to achieve important gains has been due not only to repressive, divisive and clientelist government strategies but also to certain weaknesses within these organizations themselves.
