Abstract: | In volume 10 of the 'Nouvelle géographie universelle', published in 1885, Élisée Reclus (1830-1905) dealt at length with Ethiopia. Although he never visited Africa he wrote the first relevant geographical analysis of this region. Not only did he list the descriptions and ideas prevalent at the end of the 19th century but he was the first to predict the rise of °Säwa which Menilek was later to lead in the conquest of the southern Highlands. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. in English and French. [Journal abstract] |
