Abstract:Much has been written on the fundamental importance of the family in societal reproduction. However, with the transformation of the world system since colonialism and its impact on various cultures, can we really say that the family is still the basic unit of society? Or has capitalism with its emphasis on the individual rather than the social become the basic determinant of global social structure? This paper examines these questions in relation to Africa. Particular reference is made to the impact of globalization on the spread of capitalism and its effect on the African family institution. The author argues that the African family system has disintegrated and that there is a need to resuscitate its 'social value'. Bibliogr., sum. in English and French. [ASC Leiden abstract]
