Abstract: | Timbuktu, on the edge of the Sahara desert in Mali, is a place of learning, wisdom and spirituality. According to its inhabitants, gold came from the south, salt from the north, but wisdom and divine knowledge came from this majestic city. Before the European Renaissance, Timbuktu emerged as a foremost centre of learning and trade on the African continent. This film is a premier documentary uncovering the buried legacy of Timbuktu. There are 700,000 manuscripts in Timbuktu and surroundings, dating back to the 9th century, that are on the verge of being lost if the appropriate action is not taken. The monuments are also facing major problems: they need remodeling and the roofs and ceilings are rotting. With every rainy season, part of these famous treasures melt away. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
