| Abstract: | This chapter explores the ways in which the social background of Fulbe migrants and their families inform their agency, identity and behaviour. More specifically, it considers the extent to which the ascribed positions in the social hierarchy of Fulbe society in Mali are an important means of identification for two migrant women. How did they transfer their ascribed rural elite status to the urban contexts to which they migrated and what social remittances do they use? The initial premise is that when people move, their memories travel too. Their remembering to some extent allows for the conservation of social relations and role models in the new social environment. On the other hand, different claims on memory are likely to clash in contexts where new discourses on social relations are available and may challenge the discourse on hierarchy. The chapter focuses on the conscious negiotiations of the memory of hierarchy by two elite Fulbe women in order to demonstrate how the past co-shapes the present. It argues that remembering and ideas about power relations are constitutive elements of a person's identity and agency. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. [Book abstract, edited] |
