Abstract: | This book is part of a series of water education publications released by UN-HABITAT. It contains regional and country reflections on the contribution of the Human Value-based Water Education (VBWE) initiative in meeting the national educational goals and objectives of the six pilot countries - Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Senegal and Zambia - and in creating a new water use ethic in African cities. The book also presents a summary of the process and experiences gained in the implementation of the water education initiative in African cities (Abidjan, Accra, Addis Ababa, Dakar, Lusaka and Nairobi). A project overview by Andre Dzikus is followed by a survey of tools and techniques of VBWE, a regional perspective by Victor Kanu, country perspectives by Hailu Dinka (Ethiopia), Ebenezer Charles Otu and Faustine K. Klaye (Ghana), Gabriel Muita (Kenya) and Abdourahim Gaye and Kaba Diakhate (Senegal), and chapters on the contribution of education in human values to non-formal water education (Amin Gwaderi and Pireh Otieno) and on the application of VBWE in water classrooms (Åse Johannessen). Appendices contain the recommendations of the Expert Group Meeting on Water Education in African cities which was held in Johannesburg in May 2001, VBWE lesson plans, and country declarations.
