Abstract: | The articles in this special issue deal with Nigérien identity in emerging literature and modern orature. Debra S. Boyd and Jean-Dominique Pénel write about their encounters with two Nigérien writers - Kélétigui Abdourahmane Mariko and Abdoulaye Mamani. Ali Seyni offers a perspective 'from the inside' on the passage from a local religious ritual involving sacrifice to water spirits to literary, cinematographic and theatrical creation. Mahaman L. Sériba presents a sociocultural analysis of the relation between traditional wrestling and oral art. Chaibou Elhadji Oumarou deals with symbols of leadership and conceptions of power in Hausa literature. Abdou Salam Niang reflects on Islamic values and the use of Arabo-Islamic vocabulary in the 'wakoki' (songs) of Maazou Dan Alalo. Ousmane M. Tandina discusses the joys or misfortunes of love in the courtly epics of Djado Sékou. Abdoul-Aziz Issa Daouda examines two favourite themes in Nigérien literature: drought and famine, and rural exodus and emigration. A.S. Kindo Patengouh deals with literary production in Niger, focusing on the novel. Abdou Labo Bouché and Antoinette Tidjani Alou investigate language use and literary onomastics as markers of identity in the Nigérien novel. The issue also contains portraits of Nigérien women by Kuno Schläfli and Henriette Kämp. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
